A Proposed Statement of Diversity Principles for BYU-Hawaii
We recommend that the university adopt a Statement of Diversity Principles such as:
We recognize two kinds of diversity at BYU-Hawaii:
The first is based upon the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are all created in the image of Heavenly Parents with beautiful and unique individual diversity, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny, deserving of respect and dignity. We are moral beings and agents unto ourselves, free to choose but also responsible for our choices. We are individually accountable for our choices in life and not the choices others have made. The Gospel provides us the knowledge and freedom to create transcending harmony with our gifts of individual diversity.
The second kind of diversity is based upon the purpose of a university to pursue truth. A university must create an environment where diversity of thought or viewpoint diversity can thrive. BYU-Hawaii pursues truth within the context of the the Way, the Truth, and the Light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
With these two kinds of diversity BYU-Hawaii advances its mission to integrate both spiritual and secular learning and to prepare students with character and integrity who can provide leadership in their families, their communities, their chosen fields, and in building the kingdom of God.
